Jewellery
The anchor category. Deep, seasonal and family-led — creator content works when it respects that.
Tamil Nadu is one of the strongest single-language consumer markets in India and one of the least tolerant of translated campaigns. Content written in Tamil outperforms content dubbed into it by a margin that surprises most national brands.
The standard national playbook — produce in Hindi, dub for the south — fails in Tamil Nadu more visibly than anywhere else. Audiences here recognise translated copy immediately, and the response is not indifference but active distrust.
Tamil campaigns need to be written in Tamil, by creators who think in it, with references that belong to the market. That costs slightly more in production and returns considerably more in performance. It is the single most important thing to get right in a Chennai brief.
Tamil Nadu shows unusually strong loyalty to brands that treat it as a primary market rather than a rounding error. Local brands hold share against national competitors here more successfully than in most Indian states, and consumers notice which national brands bother to show up properly.
For a national brand this cuts both ways: a half-hearted Tamil campaign performs worse than no campaign, while a committed one can build a durable position that is expensive for competitors to dislodge later.
Jewellery is the anchor category — Tamil Nadu's gold buying culture is deep, seasonal and family-led, and creator content around it works when it respects that context rather than treating gold as fashion. Automotive is second, built on the state's manufacturing base and supported by a genuinely technical review audience.
Education and test preparation carry serious weight, as does healthcare. Food is large but regionally specific — content that travels in Chennai often does not travel to Coimbatore or Madurai, and we match on audience distribution within the state rather than assuming Chennai stands for Tamil Nadu.
Briefs are developed in Tamil with the creator rather than handed down translated, and shortlists are matched on intra-state audience distribution as well as category. Everything downstream — vetting, contracts, usage rights, reporting — follows the process on the influencer marketing page.
For national brands entering the market, a batch of Tamil UGC is usually the cheapest way to find out whether your positioning survives translation before you commit to a full campaign.

You can, and it will underperform. Tamil audiences recognise translated copy immediately and tend to respond with active distrust rather than indifference. Campaigns for this market should be written in Tamil by creators who think in it, with references that belong here — the extra production cost is small next to the difference in performance.
Partly, and less automatically than brands assume. Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai audiences differ more than the single state label suggests, and content that performs in one does not always travel. We match on intra-state audience distribution rather than treating Chennai as a proxy for Tamil Nadu.
If you can commit, yes — Tamil Nadu rewards brands that treat it as a primary market with unusually durable loyalty, which is expensive for competitors to dislodge later. If you can only manage a token effort, a half-hearted Tamil campaign generally performs worse than none at all, and we would rather say that up front.
Pongal anchors the retail calendar in the way Diwali does further north, and wedding and jewellery buying cluster around auspicious dates that shift year to year. We plan Chennai calendars around those rather than around the national festive template.
