Influencer marketing for local businesses — footfall, not reach.

A café in Surat does not need a million views. It needs forty people to walk in this Saturday and half of them to come back. Most influencer marketing is built for the first problem and sold to businesses with the second. This page is about the version that fills tables, chairs and appointment slots.

Why local is a different job

Reach is the wrong number. A creator with a few thousand followers, most of them in your city, brings in more customers than one with a few hundred thousand spread across India, because the second audience cannot physically visit. The figure that matters is the share of the audience in your city, and then in your part of it.

Discovery works differently too. People find a new café through the Instagram location page and the Explore feed for their area, through Google Maps and its reviews, through round-up reels of things to do this weekend, and through WhatsApp forwards among friends deciding where to go. Language follows the city: Gujarati in Surat, Marathi in Nagpur, Tamil in Coimbatore. The Hinglish metro voice reads as an outsider, and locals notice.

Formats that fill seats

Stories on the day. The creator is there now, location sticker on, link or WhatsApp sticker up, with an offer that expires this weekend. This is the format that moves same-weekend footfall, and it is measured with a code word at the counter, not with impressions.

Location-tagged Reels. A first-visit or what-to-order reel tagged to the venue sits on the location page for months, reaching people who search the area later. Run it as a collab post with the business handle so it sits on your grid as well as the creator's; the Instagram mechanics are the same as for any brand, just aimed at a pincode.

Round-ups. Five cafés in Adajan, a weekend in Coimbatore, new salons in Dharampeth. A slot in a list costs less than a dedicated post and suits an opening, because the audience is already deciding.

Visit and Maps mention. The content on Instagram, the pin on Maps. Buy the content, never the review; paid reviews break Google's policies and get venues delisted. Barter, a meal or a treatment for a post, is common and reasonable at the nano tier, and is still a paid partnership under ASCI rules.

How to vet a hyper-local creator

Ask for the Insights screenshot of top cities and the age and gender split. It is the only number that matters, and creators who are genuinely local are happy to share it. Then read the comments. Locals name neighbourhoods and ask where exactly this is; a pan-India audience says looks yummy and moves on.

Check how often they post paid visits. A food creator with a different sponsored café every day has trained their audience to skip, and an opening invite that went to thirty creators gets you one thirtieth of the attention. Look for repeat visits and unpaid posts about places they actually go.

For clinics and gyms, read the creator's existing claims. Someone who has posted that they lost a precise number of kilos in a month, or that a treatment cured something, will do the same for you, and that is an ASCI complaint with your name on it. For real estate, a creator who has fronted five projects in three cities this quarter has no standing with a Nagpur buyer, whatever their following.

The brief, and the categories with rules

The local brief is short and specific: address and map pin, opening hours, what to order or try, the offer and how it is redeemed, the day and time to post, the exact location tag, and the business handle for the collab post. Get it in writing, even one page; our brief template fits.

Clinics are the awkward one. Doctors are restricted from soliciting patients by the National Medical Commission's ethics regulations, and ASCI's health guidelines rule out cure claims, miracle before-and-afters and treatment testimonials. Creators should show the visit and the experience, not the result. Salons and gyms can use honest before-and-after content with disclosure, but time-bound weight-loss promises and unsubstantiated fitness claims are out.

Real estate content for a registered project must carry the project's RERA registration number and the authority's website address, as any advertisement must, and guaranteed returns cannot be promised. Events need the ticket link and code timed to the on-sale window. Everything paid, including barter, carries an ASCI disclosure in the Story or Reel itself.

How we run local campaigns

We work in 20 city markets. Embeddings of a creator's content and audience signals let us rank on city share, neighbourhood, language and category rather than follower count, and a human strategist checks the audience screenshots on every local shortlist. You get the shortlist within 48 hours with each creator's rate shown and our fee separate; local rates are often small and sometimes barter, and you see which is which.

We recommend nano and micro creators almost without exception here, for the reasons on our micro influencer marketing page. Contracts go out before the visit, even for a meal-for-a-post arrangement, and payment is half on confirmation, half on delivery. Reporting counts what a local business counts: code words redeemed, WhatsApp enquiries, direction requests on Maps during the campaign week, bookings. Surat, Nagpur and Coimbatore are three markets where the local creator pool is deep and rates have not caught up with the metros. Start a campaign and the first shortlist is free.

(02) — FAQ

Local Business campaigns, answered.

How many followers should a local influencer have?

It is the wrong question. What matters is the share of the audience in your city and neighbourhood, which you get from the creator's Insights screenshot, and whether the comments come from locals. Nano and micro creators almost always win for a single-location business, because their audience can actually visit, and their rates leave room for several creators across the areas you serve rather than one big name.

Can a clinic or doctor use influencer marketing in India?

With care. Doctors are restricted from soliciting patients under the National Medical Commission's ethics regulations, and ASCI's health guidelines rule out cure claims, miracle before-and-afters and treatment testimonials. What works is a creator showing the visit and the experience of the clinic, with disclosure, and no claims about outcomes. Get the wording checked before the creator posts, not after.

Does real estate influencer content need a RERA number?

Yes. Content promoting a registered project is an advertisement, and RERA requires every advertisement to carry the project's registration number and the state authority's website address. Guaranteed returns and appreciation promises are not allowed. Brief the creator with the exact text, and check it before approval; a missing number is a complaint the developer, not the creator, answers for.

Is a free meal for a post allowed, and does it need disclosure?

It is allowed and it is common at the nano tier. It is also a paid partnership under ASCI rules, so the Story or Reel needs a clear disclosure in the content itself. Put the arrangement in a one-page written agreement anyway: what is provided, what gets posted and when, the location tag, and whether you may reshare it. Most disputes in local work come from barter deals nobody wrote down.
